Book Review: The Sword Polisher's Record, The Way of Kung-Fu, by AdamHsu

Adam Hsu, with his first book, bridges the gap between Chinese and American culture in an attempt to clear misconceptions we (westerners) may have about the ancient art of Kung-fu.

Hsu’s book, a collection of monthly columns published over the years, aims to insure the passage of quality Kung-fu practice to the next generation of kung fu practitioners. Hsu’s goal is to educate novice martial artists in the reality of the ancient martial art – to combat the mystical misconceptions provided by Hollywood.

Topics the author touches on:

  • Misunderstanding chi

  • Aspects of real Kung-fu

  • Finding a teacher of quality Kung-fu

  • Basic concepts and principles utilized in Kung-fu

  • Future of Kung-fu

I find that this book is greatly helpful when in the hands of a novice martial artist seeking Kung-fu instruction.

Regardless of whether one practices Kung-fu or not, an experienced reader may find this book to repeat itself, which allows for a ‘draggy’ read.

Despite this, one who has just embarked on a martial journey in the Chinese arts must read this book to ensure the right path is taken; far too many bogus Kung-fu clubs exist to this date.

Follow Sifu Hsu’s guidelines and one will find themselves studying in a Kwoon (training hall) with an instructor backed by thousands of years of Chinese martial wisdom.
